Collaborative Revisions: Reshaping Universal Rights
──────────────────────────────────────── What does ‘universality’ mean? Can something ever be truly ‘universal’? And, if so, doesn’t universality always imply a certain level of generalisation and, thus, oppression? Is there a way to find unity within difference instead?
Throughout this collaborative project, Inna Kochkina and I have explored the above questions by attempting to collectively challenge and complicate the notion of universality. In doing so, rather than seeking to simplify its origins and implications, we accept that the universal can never be seen in totality and we embrace this opacity. The all is trouble—and we choose to stay with it.
We do this by using the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as a tool to make both its meaning and implications more tangible. The project, makes use of different methodologies including artistic research, critical theory, collaborative writing, performative workshops, experimental printing techniques, and open discussions to explore this core questions.
